Miyar Adventures (pronounced “Mee yaar”) is a small guiding company based in Ballard, Washington near Seattle. The name comes from a valley in the Indian Himalaya where the company owner did several first ascents. The company’s focus is summer backpacking, rock climbing, and alpine climbing in the Cascades. Miyar also runs snowshoeing and winter backpacking trips. The company has a family-like working culture and a loyal following of return clients. The company has been growing rapidly over the past seven years. Miyar Adventures is known for its work to make guiding and outdoor instruction more financially sustainable and emotionally fulfilling career choices, while also creating a space that is welcoming to people from all backgrounds.
Miyar is developing a more robust winter schedule of program offerings, which will include avalanche education, winter navigation, backcountry skiing/split boarding, and ski mountaineering.
Job Summary:We are looking for an experienced AIARE Course Leader who is excited about the opportunity to develop a new avalanche education program for a reputable guide service. The candidate should enjoy working with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds, as our management team and clientele are diverse. The candidate should also be a skilled teacher who enjoys teaching those who are new to winter recreation.
Avalanche Education Program Director responsibilities
- Oversee the logistics and structure of avalanche education courses, within the AIARE framework
- Oversee the recruitment and hiring of AIARE Course Instructors and Course Leaders as needed for the winter season
- Provide mentorship and direction to avalanche educators on staff
- Provide mentorship to guide staff who work in avalanche terrain
- Assist office staff with the application process for commercial use authorizations (CUAs) on public lands for winter trips
- Assist with the scheduling of avalanche education courses
- Develop a database of backcountry course areas to be used by avalanche educators
- Develop risk management policies and guidelines for winter programs, or amend current risk management policies and guidelines to reflect the complexity of mountain terrain in winter conditions.
- Communicate with students and clients about upcoming winter courses or programs
- Gather feedback about winter courses and trips to further develop and improve winter program offerings
- Assist with the development of other winter programs, such as backcountry skiing, split boarding, and ski mountaineering
- Provide input on marketing efforts for winter programs
- Lead AIARE courses between December and April
- Complete needed prep work for the winter season. When practical this may be done remotely.
- This list of duties is not comprehensive. Other duties may be assigned. Miyar management will work with the Avalanche Education Program Director to match job responsibilities with the Director’s schedule, passion, and skill set.
Minimum qualifications and job requirements:
Required Training:- AIARE Course Leader Certification
- Wilderness First Responder or WEMT
- Completion of AMGA ski/splitboard guide track programs preferred
- 5 years working within the space of avalanche education
- Program development experience preferred
- Management experience preferred
- Familiarity with backcountry skiing or split boarding areas in Washington State, or the ability to gain this familiarity on personal time prior to the first AIARE program
Compensation:
- $400/day while teaching AIARE avalanche courses.
- $425/day while teaching AIARE courses, after completing 6 full-days of AIARE course instruction (two ½ days equals one full day)
- $200/day if doing ½ day instruction in AIARE courses. $215/day for half-days after completing 6 full-days of AIARE instruction.
- Pay for courses or guide work that are not AIARE avalanche courses will be assessed separately, and is dependent on level of relevant AMGA training and leadership experience in specific terrain types.
- $30/hr for program development, staff recruitment, and other office work

Miyar Adventures is looking for lead guides to run trips in Washington State during the summer season from June 1st to September 1st.

Miyar runs glacier mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, backpacking, and snowshoeing trips as well as instructional courses in the Pacific Northwest. Lead guide responsibilities
- Lead guide responsibilities include client communication before and after trips, packing-out group climbing and camping equipment, trip planning and coordination, route selection and navigation, group management, leading and instructing field-based courses and climbs on snow, ice, and rock, conflict resolution, course debriefs, and mentoring assistant guides.
- Lead guides will work closely with the Climbing Programs Director, Company Owner, and Store Manager to plan, pack-out, and debrief trips. Lead guides oversee assistant guides in the delivery of field courses and climbs.
Minimum qualifications and job requirements:
- At least five years of professional mountain guiding or similar experience.
- Completion of guide-track courses and exams through the American Mountain Guides Association or other IFMGA affiliates (ski, rock, and/or alpine disciplines)..
- Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT certification
- AIARE Avalanche Level 2/Pro 1 Training or similar certification.
- Ability to perform crevasse rescue as a solo rescuer.
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent group management skills.
- Must enjoy working with beginners on basic-level courses and climbs as well as in more complex terrain.
- A personality that is well-liked by clients from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Preferred: Leave-No-Trace Trainer or Master Educator.
- Preferred: AMGA certified alpine, rock, and ski guides.
Compensation:
Compensation for lead guides ranges between $200 and $310 per day (plus tips) depending on certification level and experience. For lead guides who work fifteen or more days per season, and who make a commitment to work for Miyar for at least two years, additional compensation for professional training- such as AMGA courses and exams- is made available following an end-of-season performance review.

Miyar Adventures is looking for assistant mountain guides to run trips in Washington State during the 2019 summer season from June 1st to September 1st.

Assistant guide responsibilities
- Assistant guide responsibilities include working with lead guides to pack-out trips, check client gear, and plan routes. Assistant guides work under lead guides on climbs and courses in mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, rescue, and on custom course offerings. Following trips assistant guides will work with lead guides to collect group gear and debrief the trip.
- Assistant guides work closely with the Climbing Programs Director in developing a work schedule, determining responsibilities, and debriefing trips. Assistant guides report directly to Lead Guides in the delivery of courses and climbs
Minimum qualifications and job requirements:
- AMGA Single Pitch Instructor, AMGA Alpine Skills Course graduate, or higher level of certification through an IFMGA affiliate.
- Previous experience leading overnight mountaineering and/or climbing trips. This experience can be for guide companies, educational institutions, or non-profits.
- Wilderness First Responder or WEMT certification
- Extensive personal glacier mountaineering and climbing experience.
- Wilderness First Responder or WEMT certification
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Excellent group management skills.
- Must enjoy working with beginners on basic-level courses and climbs as well as in more complex terrain.
- A personality that is well-liked by clients from a variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- The ability to handle the physical, mental, and emotional challenges of working with clients and fellow guides in difficult terrain, poor weather, and for extended periods of time.
- Valid Driver's License.
- AAA accredited level 1 avalanche certification or higher (such as AIARE Level 1).
- Preferred: Leave-No-Trace Trainer or Master Educator certification.

Compensation:
Compensation for assistant guides ranges between $160 and $180 per day (plus tips) depending on certification level and experience. In addition to daily guide rates, compensation for professional training- such as AMGA courses and exams- is made available to guides who work fifteen or more days per season and commit to working for Miyar for at least two years.

Company Description:
Miyar Adventures is a family owned mountain guiding and adventure travel company located in Seattle, Washington. Miyar runs guided backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, and instructional courses in the Pacific Northwest and overseas in Nepal, Peru, India, and Tanzania. The bulk of programs run by Miyar are mountaineering trips on glaciated peaks of the Pacific Northwest such as Mt. Baker, Mt. Shuksan, Glacier Peak, Mt. Olympus, and Sahale Peak. Miyar run backpacking trips in the Mt Rainier National Park, Olympics National Park, North Cascades, Mt Baker and Snoqualmie forest area. The rock climbing courses are run at Exit-38, Mt Erie and Index climbing area. Miyar runs guided rock climbs on The Tooth, Forbidden, Pickets and other peaks in the North Cascades. Miyar also runs fundraising climbs for the non-profit ASHA on Mt. Rainier. The company has been growing rapidly since its creation three years ago, which has resulted in an expansion of the number and type of programs offered, and the opening of a retail store in Woodinville which also offers rentals of mountaineering and backpacking equipment.
Internship Duties:
- Coordinate client registration and preparation for programs via email, phone, and Skype.
- Process client registrations and oversee payment schedules.
- Work with Sandeep and Climbing Director to manage local climbs and programs.
- Assist in organizing events and presentations at the retail store and in other locations in the Seattle Area.
- Assist in the creation of marketing materials and strategies.
- Maintain inventory in our retail store, rentals department, and office:
- Course equipment rental requests and returns
- Food, clothing, and gear in the retail store
- Group climbing and camping gear used by guides
- Organize food and manage food request inventory.
- General cleaning, drying, and upkeep of equipment.
Minimum qualifications and job requirements:
- Personal and/or professional experience with outdoor recreation such as backpacking, mountaineering, and rock and ice climbing.
- Experience with Microsoft Office products including: Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Lync
- Experience using the Google Docs/Drive sweet
- Ability to manage a variable schedule with a multitude of deadlines.
- Must own a personal laptop or computer with Microsoft Office 2011 or later edition that can be used for work purposes.
- Must have personal transport to and from the working location at 17311 135th Ave NE, Ste. #C-500, Woodinville, WA 98072, United States.
- Must own a cell phone that can be used for work purposes.
Commitment:
This is an eight to twelve-week commitment. The timing of this commitment is somewhat flexible, but the summer months are strongly preferred.
Compensation:
Work trade credit toward Miyar Adventures guided trips is available at the rate of $11/hour. Personal climbing technique or rescue instruction may be available when the work schedules and locations of guides overlap with the work schedule and location of the internee.
